| 5th February 2010 |
Excellent turn up and great talk from Chris de Fraga the well known Age motoring writer. Once again the supper was a "sellout". |
| 5th March 2010 See pics below |
We were treated to the sight and sounds of Doug's and Anthony's bent eight Hot Rods on proud display at our March meeting. Our very own Doug Fielder who I have discovered has an amazingly wide interest in all things automotive very kindly (despite bouts of rain) presented his 'T' Bucket Ford. This 30 year passion all built by Doug himself featured classic 'T' Bucket looks whilst being powered by a big block 383 cube Chrysler. Doug also managed to persuade his friend Anthony Shaw to join him on the dance floor with his very tough 1930, 5 window fully fendered Ford Coupe. How tough? Matte black, red graphics, small block Chev pumping 400 horses at the rear end, plus quarter mile times in the 12 second bracket! Doug gave us a great talk on the Hot Rod movement and in particular the philosophies of building your own Rod. I will be interested to see if any of our clubs Sprites and Midgets start sprouting eight cylinder engines with twin tunnel rammed 4bbls or 4-71 Gimmy supercharges. Big thanks to Doug and Anthony for a great presentation and display. Hot Rods weren’t the only feature of the night though; we also had a Hot Rod quiz, and period fashion display.Naturally hot dogs were served for supper thanks to Deb Roper and all to the appropriate tunes from the American Graffiti sound track. |
| 9th April 2010 |
Robert Dunt, the CAMS Sport and Club Development Officer didn't come.Instead we had an impromptu smorgasbord meeting with a number of club members contributing to what ended up being a great night: four separate presentations and quiz questions, tales of the Nurburgring, raffles and a slide show. Thanks to all presenters. |

From boyhood Mike Dore's imagination had been captured by Shackleton and his Antarctic expeditions and finally in March 09, accompanied by his son Jeremy, a lifelong dream was fulfilled when he boarded Polar Pioneer with Aurora Expeditions bound for the icy south. The trip which was advertised as 'Shackleton Odyssey' was to trace the movements over land and sea of this famous polar adventurer; in Mike's own words, “To follow the path of one of the most enigmatic leaders and explorers of the Heroic era was irresistible .....” and follow it they did. From Ushuaia in Argentina to King George island, Perception island, Elephant island and onward to South Georgia where Mike and Jeremy and a couple of other brave souls partook in a 2 day trek which followed in the foot steps of his boyhood hero. Great evening and a fantastic supper courtesy Deb Roper. |
| 4th June 2010 |
The first Friday in June was Film Night and not Rob Crichton as advertised. However, members were treated to that wonderful classic documentary featuring the 1958 'Coupes De Alpes'. This would have to be some of the earliest footage of Mk1 Sprites being driven in anger. The sight of '58 Bugeyes and other contemporary classics belting around goat tracks with scant regard to safety was quite amazing. Next film was a showing of in-car footage of a 1976 six wheel Tyrrell P34 being punted around the Nurburgring, I think by Jody Scheckter. While all this was happening, the real star of the evening was busy in the kitchen. Terri, who had already provided popcorn and Jaffa munchies, turned out ribs, meat balls, chicken wings and mini dim sims which was served Gold Class Movie style (well sort of). Thanks Terri for a great supper. |
| 2nd July 2010 |
Three of our July guests were of the 'weather be damned' category and braved the inclement Melbourne winter to bring us a great display of classics not normally seen at the club rooms. One lovely silver Datsun 260Z and two gleaming red Bolwells were a wonderful treat to brighten the gloomy Friday evening. Our thanks go to Rob Crichton (Datsun 260Z), Mark Wells (Bolwell Mk7 convertible) and Gary Allen (Bolwell Nagari coupe) for displaying their cars and taking the time to tell us about their history, restoration and use. Not only were the Datsun and Bolwell car clubs represented but also the Vauxhall Owners club who sent two ambassadors in the form of Hugh Walker and Keith Merrilees to the tell us of the activities and history of the VOCA. Hugh complete with pictorial display, proudly told us of his collection of Vauxhall Vagabonds. |
| 7th August 2010 |
Brett Whelan and Chris Tasker, both steam fanatics, gave us a brilliant insight into the history and workings of locomotion powered by the simple ingredients of coal and H2O. We were treated to a wonderful award winning short film “A Steam train Passes”. This atmospheric 1970's production took us from the pre dawn start to the nostalgic views of the NSW city and country all from the viewpoint of Loco 3801. With the further help of slides and photos Chris and Brett outlined the rigours of actually becoming an engine driver: From 'Call Boy' to 'Cleaner' to 'Trainee Fireman' then to 'Fireman' and on to the entry 'Driver' ranks with each stage crammed with study and lengthy written exams; it might have been easier to become an astronaut! They had even travelled to Poland for a 'working holiday' on the only remaining commercial steam locomotive service left in the world. Running between the cities of Wolszton and Ponznan, steam fanatics from all round the globe pay for the privilege to work like ten men for seven days on the foot plate of an aging Eastern Bloc steam loco. Surely this must be every capitalists dream come true! |
| 3rd September 2010 |
Firstly we will be having a presentation from Michelle Brownstein from Berry Street. As most of you will be aware by now Berry Street, with its focus on homeless and disadvantaged children, is an organisation that the AHSDC has been proud to support in the past few years. Also being 'That Month' in Victoria it is impossible to escape Grand Final fever and what goes with football? Meat pies and Holden cars of course. So we are organising to have some interesting classic Holdens for display including a Group N racing EH. Naturally expect meat pies for supper and any one brave enough to wear their footy team's scarf or colours will also receive additional club gear raffle tickets. So join in the fun and don't miss this meeting. |
